Neck dissection workshop

Hands-on Cadaver Workshop on Comprehensive Neck Dissection
The Hands-on Cadaver Workshop on Neck Dissection is an intensive surgical masterclass jointly organized by the Department of ENT / Head & Neck Surgery, Surgical Oncology, and the Department of Anatomy. Formulating the cornerstone of oncological management for upper aerodigestive tract malignancies, neck dissection demands surgical precision, deep fascial plane clearance, and thorough nodal clearance across cervical levels I through VI.

This specialized workshop provides ENT surgeons, surgical oncologists, general surgeons, and postgraduate residents with hands-on cadaveric dissection stations, high-grade head and neck specimens, specialized surgical instrumentation, and step-by-step guidance from senior head & neck oncologists and clinical anatomists.

Key Workshop Highlights & Objectives
Delegates perform live knife-to-skin anatomical exposures mastering selective, modified radical, and radical neck dissections, with an emphasis on systematic lymph node clearance while preserving non-lymphatic vital neurovascular structures.

  • Cervical Lymphadenectomy – Stepwise nodal clearance across Levels I (Ia/Ib), II (IIa/IIb), III, IV, V, and VI
  • Vital Structure Preservation – In-depth exposure and protection of the spinal accessory nerve (CN XI), internal jugular vein (IJV), and SCM
  • ENT, Oncosurgery & Anatomy Synergy – Integrating surgical oncological principles with deep fascial anatomy
  • Small Batch Excellence – Strictly limited registrations ensuring extensive individual station dissection time
  • Cranial Nerve Mapping – Identification of hypoglossal (CN XII), vagus (CN X), marginal mandibular, and phrenic nerves
All cadaveric dissections are performed adhering strictly to ethical guidelines and institutional protocols, offering surgeons realistic fascial plane tactile feedback, vascular control confidence, and nodal boundary clarity vital for clinical oncosurgery.
Structured Hands-on Dissection Curriculum
The program bridges cervical fascial architecture with operative oncology planning, live surgical table prosections, and comprehensive cadaveric clearance.
The curriculum systematically advances from surface incision design (Apron, McFee, Utility incisions) and subplatysmal flap elevation through submandibular gland excision (Level I), spinal accessory nerve tracing (Levels IIb & V), carotid sheath clearance (Levels IIa, III, IV), to central compartment lymphadenectomy (Level VI).

Stepwise Workshop Matrix

Session 1: Flap Elevation & Level I | Session 2: Lateral Neck & CN XI Tracing | Session 3: Lower Neck & Central Compartment
Incision planning & subplatysmal flap raising | Subdigastric nodal clearance (Level IIa/IIb) | Lower jugular node clearance (Level IV) & thoracic duct care
Marginal mandibular nerve preservation | Tracing CN XI through the posterior triangle (Level V) | Posterior triangle fatty tissue clearance (Level Va/Vb)
Submandibular gland excision (Level Ib) | Carotid sheath dissection: IJV, CCA & Vagus nerve | Level VI clearance: recurrent laryngeal nerve & parathyroids
Lingual & hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) identification | Erb’s point & cervical plexus nerve roots | Hemostasis, drain placement & layered closure

Core Surgical Modules & Syllabus
Guided by experienced head and neck oncosurgeons, delegates perform sequential operative dissections on cadaveric cervical specimens:

Executing transverse cervical or utility incisions, raising subplatysmal flaps while preserving the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve, anterior jugular veins, and great auricular nerve.
Submental triangle clearance (Level Ia) bounded by the anterior bellies of the digastric. Level Ib dissection including facial vessel ligation at the lower mandibular border, submandibular salivary gland excision, and identification of the lingual nerve, submandibular ganglion, and hypoglossal nerve.
Opening the investing layer along the SCM, clearing Level IIb above the accessory nerve and Level IIa around the jugulodigastric node. Stripping the fascia over the internal jugular vein (Levels III and IV), preserving the carotid bifurcation, ansa cervicalis, and vagus nerve.
Dissecting the posterior triangle bounded by SCM, trapezius, and clavicle. Identifying and neurolysing the spinal accessory nerve as it enters the trapezius, clearing lymphoadipose tissue while safeguarding the brachial plexus and phrenic nerve over scalenus anterior.
Meticulous dissection at the left jugulosubclavian junction to identify and ligate the thoracic duct to prevent chyle leak. Central compartment (Level VI) lymphadenectomy with skeletonization of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and parathyroid preservation.
Faculty from the Department of Anatomy demonstrate deep cervical fascia layers (investing, pretracheal, prevertebral, and carotid sheath) to establish clear surgical planes.
Eligibility & Workstation Infrastructure
Designed for ENT surgeons, surgical oncologists, general surgeons, and postgraduate residents looking to master safe and thorough cervical lymphadenectomy.
Workstation orientation includes safe retracting ergonomics to prevent neural neuropraxia, vascular ligation techniques, and specimen preservation.
