surgical approaches to upper limb and lower limb

Hands-on Cadaver Workshop on Surgical Approaches to Upper Limb & Lower Limb
Conducted on February 21 & 22, 2026, this comprehensive 2-day surgical masterclass was organised jointly by the Department of Orthopaedics and the Department of Anatomy, in prestigious academic association with the Bagalkot District Orthopaedic Association (BDOA) and the Karnataka Orthopaedic Association (KOA).

Tailored specifically for 20 postgraduate orthopaedic residents, this intensive workshop provided knife-to-skin dissection experience across critical trauma corridors, internervous planes, and complex joint exposures of both the upper and lower extremities.

Key Highlights & Dissection Goals
Delegates worked in small groups under the direct guidance of senior orthopaedic trauma faculty, state KOA mentors, and clinical anatomists, mastering practical surgical approaches while prioritizing neurovascular preservation.

  • Dual Extremity Masterclass – 2 intensive days dedicated to upper limb (Day 1) and lower limb (Day 2) exposures
  • Internervous & Intermuscular Planes – Navigating safe anatomical intervals to prevent denervation and devascularization
  • Academic Alliance – Organised by Dept. of Orthopaedics & Anatomy in association with BDOA & KOA
  • Focused Training Cohort – Strictly capped at 20 PG students for maximized table time and direct proctoring
  • Neurovascular Safeguards – Direct identification and mobilization of sciatic, femoral, radial, and median nerves
All cadaveric dissections were performed adhering strictly to ethical guidelines and institutional protocols, offering postgraduates true-to-life tactile resistance and spatial depth orientation crucial for operative trauma care.
Structured 2-Day Module Schedule (21/02/2026 – 22/02/2026)
The curriculum systematically balanced didactic trauma lectures, interactive osteology sessions, live faculty table demonstrations, and hands-on cadaveric dissection.
Day 1 was dedicated to Upper Limb surgical exposures: shoulder girdle, humeral shaft, elbow intervals, and volar/dorsal forearm. Day 2 transitioned to Lower Limb surgical approaches: anterior and posterior hip exposures, femur corridors, knee joint approaches, tibial shaft, and malleolar fixation pathways.

Two-Day Curriculum Breakdown

Day 1: Upper Limb Surgical Approaches | Day 2: Lower Limb Surgical Approaches
Deltopectoral & anterolateral approaches to shoulder & humerus | Anterior (Smith-Petersen) & posterior (Moore/Southern) hip approaches
Posterior triceps-splitting & lateral Kocher elbow intervals | Anterolateral & lateral approaches to the femur and distal shaft
Henry volar & Thompson dorsal approaches to radius & forearm | Anteromedial, anterolateral & posterior approaches to knee joint
Carpal tunnel release & Guyon canal decompression | Posterolateral & medial approaches to tibia and ankle fracture corridors

Core Surgical Modules & Syllabus
Guided by experts from KOA, BDOA, and institutional faculty, delegates performed comprehensive limb dissections covering critical operative pathways:

Deltopectoral interval dissection with cephalic vein preservation, subscapularis mobilization, anterior glenohumeral exposure, and posterior triceps-splitting approach to the midshaft humerus with formal radial nerve tracing along the spiral groove.
Lateral approach to the elbow via Kocher’s interval (anconeus and ECU), medial approach with ulnar nerve isolation, volar Henry approach between brachioradialis and pronator teres, and dorsal Thompson approach protecting the posterior interosseous nerve (PIN).
Anterior Smith-Petersen approach exploiting the interval between sartorius and tensor fasciae latae, Watson-Jones lateral approach, and the classic Southern posterior approach with short external rotator tenotomy and sciatic nerve identification.
Medial parapatellar arthrotomy, subvastus approach, lateral parapatellar approach, and posterolateral/posteromedial approaches to the tibial plateau fractures protecting the peroneal nerve and popliteal neurovascular bundle.
Anterolateral and posteromedial approaches to pilon fractures, medial and lateral malleolar exposures, and practical techniques for single- and dual-incision 4-compartment leg fasciotomies for acute compartment syndrome.
Faculty from the Department of Anatomy demonstrated cross-sectional relations and fascial boundaries, providing anatomical validation for safe internal fixation corridors.
Eligibility & Workstation Infrastructure
Designed to elevate operative confidence and surgical precision for postgraduates before undertaking major trauma and fracture fixations.
Each dissection table received comprehensive orientation regarding surgical safety, tissue plane dissection, proper retracting ergonomics, and limb specimen handling.
